SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability has many facets. Environmental protection is just one of them. We take a broader view and are conscious of our economic, environmental and social responsibilities. We are committed to a sustainable corporate policy.

As a family-owned company, we pursue long-term business policies. Professionally executed financial management and a strategic focus on sustained and inclusive growth are the economic basis for these policies. Our shareholders and executive management are committed to the long-term health and productivity of employees and to effective environmental protection.

Economy

Economy As a strong international logistics provider, we invest in the future and in stability. High-quality logistics services, a strategy of organic growth and smart financing concepts secure our long-term success.

By reinvesting profits into our own network, know-how and future-pointing technologies, we build the foundation for further corporate sustainability initiatives.

Our goal is to encourage society and the logistics industry to commit more strongly to sustainable issues. With an endowed Chair for Sustainable Logistics & Supply Chain Management at the European Business School, we are investing in sustainability research with a focus on logistics. This aims to scientifically examine how logistics strategies can be successfully oriented towards the principles of sustainability. Research is also directed at finding ways to measure and hence control sustainability goals and develop processes for implementation.

Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility We build on a high level of social consciousness that is geared towards cooperation with customers and staff. People who work at Dachser have in-depth expertise.

We enhance our know-how through permanent training and qualification in professional, social and leadership skills. This is organized by our very own in-house training academy. Our extensive personnel development programmes are complemented by a health programme and a company pension scheme to ensure our staff are well looked after on all levels.

We assume social responsibility by also supporting specifically selected projects outside our company. These range from programmes to promote young talent, for example through endowed university chairs, via a cooperation project with terre des hommes to secure schooling for Indian children, through to decentrally organized social projects in our branch offices around the world.

One example: In cooperation with the international children’s relief organization terre des hommes, Dachser is helping people to help themselves. In Uttar Pradesh, one of the poorest and most populous regions of India, Dachser and its local partners are promoting the self-initiative of the local population through an education campaign that aims to help improve living and working conditions and, like this, offer brighter prospects for the future of the entire region.

The balance after five years of common effort is impressive. When Dachser launched the aid project, the goal was to offer schooling to 7,000 children, provide teaching materials and sanitary facilities for 25 schools, build 2 learning centres and prepare 1,500 pupils for the job market.

The goals were surpassed many times over: thanks to the project more than 11,000 children have received a school education. Instead of two, as many as seven educational and vocational centres have been built; at the same time classrooms have been set up and drinking fountains and toilets installed in 43 state schools.

Dachser sponsored the project with an investment of EUR 500,000.

In October 2010, phase 2 of the project was launched. This is also designed to run over five years and will be sponsored by Dachser with a total amount of EUR 400,000. The aim is to consolidate the results achieved so far over the long term and promote environmental awareness in the region. The project has therefore been extended to include a climate change programme.

Ecology

Ecology Thanks to intelligent logistics, we consolidate goods flows, rely on systems freight services, double-deck swap bodies, utilize IT-optimized tour planning and train our drivers in how to drive efficiently.

The principle: the highest possible capacity utilization of the cargo area reduces traffic. We choose our commercial vehicles according to low-emission criteria, our buildings are built in line with the latest energy efficiency standards.

One example: In our Food Logistics business segment, we only utilize vehicles that have a heat insulated superstructure pursuant to DIN 8959 or are ATP-approved and suitable for frozen foodstuffs. Inflatable door seals prevent uncontrolled loss of cooling energy in food logistics halls. With these measures we save energy and protect the environment.
