Vuelta is the third largest cycling event after the Tour de France and the Giro d`Italia. In three weeks 198 pro cyclists completed 21 stages and raced more than 3,300 kilometers through large parts of Spain: from Galicia in the northwest, across Andalusia in the south, northwest to Catalonia, along the Cantabrian coast, and a showdown in the Pyrenees.

Speeding just ahead of the cyclists was Azkar baggage train full of equipment that had to reach often remote finish lines for each stage, both securely and reliably. It’s always a big responsibility for Azkar, the official logistics partner, because the wheels really spin smoothly at the Vuelta only if the television broadcast, merchandising, press booths, cyclist and spectator catering, and medical staff facilities are present. Azkar provided 28 semi-trailers with XXL cabs for these purposes. Attached to them were 10 open trailers that served as stages (VIP (3), podium, access control, medical station, press, media, permanent field office, and Junior-Vuelta), 12 covered trailers (with platforms and tarpaulins), three box trailers (for merchandising), two refrigerated trailers (for drinks), and one container trailer (the field kitchen). A truck served as the permanent field office. In addition, Azkar provided another truck for the televised broadcast of the race.

This year, a total of 200 Azkar employees throughout Spain supported the Vuelta, investing more than 8,000 hours in planning and carrying out the logistics for this major sporting event. When in the spotlight, there can be no compromise with quality: last year, the whole Azkar team reported only a single flat tire.

Juan Antonio Quintana, Azkar CEO, says: “Cycling is the number one sport in our country if you want the focus to be on performance, teamwork and commitment. In addition, the Vuelta is Spain's flagship sporting event—which is exactly what Azkar is striving to be in the logistics industry. We could hardly wish for a better way to demonstrate to the public our capacity as a service provider with a global logistics network than by the perfect organization of all transport needs for the Vuelta – down to the tiniest detail. That’s the quality we offer customers who put their trust in Azkar every day.”

Azkar is one of the biggest Iberian logistics providers and market leader in the Spanish groupage segment. The company, bought by DACHSER at the turn of 2012 and 2013, employees more than 3,000 people.
