These rings were the individual parts of an autoclave on the first leg of their long journey to China.

Extremely wide, very high, and tremendously heavy: when a heavyweight takes a trip, every step must be spot on. Cables have to be lifted or temporarily removed, roads are closed, or the median strip on the highway may need to be reinforced with steel plates. But what happens when low water levels prevent an inland waterway vessel from operating?

When the handling staff load the swap bodies or the semi-trailers for long-haul transport, they have to summon up the skills of a Tetris champion. The aim is to load as many goods as possible on the floor or in double-decker fashion whilst ensuring there are no gaps which could cause the goods to slide out of place. The dimensions, packaging, weight limits or arrival times of local transport vehicles often make the task more difficult than one would think. Luckily though there are practical tools to help make loading secure and safe.

The digital age has long begun, and our day-to-day life is full of technologies that—just a few years ago—were relegated to the realm of science fiction.
In this era of interconnected business processes, collaboration and integration are decisive for small and medium-sized companies from trade and industry. To make a success of the digital transformation, what is called for are decentralized structures with flat, process-oriented hierarchies. These are the core messages from an interview with Bernhard Simon, CEO of logistics provider DACHSER, and Professor Michael Henke, director of Fraunhofer IML and chair of Enterprise Logistics at the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund.

3D printing is no longer sci-fi: metal parts for aircraft, for example, are already now no longer being welded together out of individual components – the entire subassemblies are already being printed out. Mass production appears to be just a matter of time. This is opening up a new world of business for certain branches of industry – but does this go for logistics as well?
It’s the quiet, retiring type that quite literally sinks into the floor. Definitely not out of embarrassment, though, because the underfloor conveyor system, or UFCS for short, is one of the most valuable and productive tools for dealing with high transport volumes. That is why at DACHSER, too, it doggedly keeps on turning round after round, as an effective additional tool to supplement forklifts or stackers.

"Who invented it?" Ricola’s ad is cult: an agent traveling to Hong Kong, Mexico or Finland, pointedly reminding people living there that it was the Swiss who invented herbal cough drops. But how did the world come to know cough drops in the first place? This is where DACHSER comes in, distributing the “Swiss-made” product in 50 countries throughout the world – including in its main market, the USA, for example.

A field test at DACHSER is pointing the way.
