Disruptions due to Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit will be held in Qingdao, a coastal city in Shandong province in China. The date of the Summit is confirmed to be 9th to 10th June.

Founded on 15th June 2001 in Shanghai, the SCO is an EuroAsian organization comprising China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan as full members. As the current president of the SCO, China will hold the Summit this year to work out a long-term collaboration with its neighbor countries in terms of security, economic, cultural and environmental cooperation. A broad range of security measures have been taken before and during the Summit.

Impact on general business

  • Starting 20th May until the end of the Summit, the office building where DACHSER Qingdao Branch is located will be cleared. Only pre-registered employees with an entry pass given by the authorities will be allowed to enter the premises; guests will be asked to present their personal identification documents at the building entrance and must be accompanied by an employee with an entry pass.
  • DACHSER Qingdao Branch will be closed completely from 7th to 10th June. There will be no staff attending the office and operations stop.
  • Hotels in the city area will not open to the public starting a few days or even weeks prior to the Summit.

Impact on air freight

  • From 1st to 11th June, 70% of domestic flights to and from Qingdao will be cancelled. Therefore the majority of airlines will not accept domestic freight bookings for the same period.
  • Many international flights including passenger and cargo flights will be cancelled before and after the Summit.

Impact on sea freight

  • As per standard procedures, Dangerous Goods are not allowed to enter the port of Qingdao except of class 8 and 9. From 1st to 20th June, these classes will also be banned, however transit will be possible.
  • The China Maritime Safety Agency (MSA) has been conducting special security inspections since 20th April on board of vessels. The controls are supposed to last until mid of June. For vessels which shall enter Qingdao waters during this period a ‘special information report’ has to be submitted to the MSA prior to arrival in Qingdao.
If you have shipments to or from Qingdao, you are welcome to get in touch with your DACHSER representative to check if it is affected.
