Following recent announcements, all major ocean carriers are introducing an Emergency Bunker Surcharge (EBS) for Full Container Load (FCL) and Less Container Load (LCL) shipments on all trades. DACHSER therefore sees the necessity to follow the same.

The National Coordination Committee of India’s major port and dock worker federations has decided to call for a nationwide one-day strike which was scheduled on 28th May. Following a meeting with the Indian Ports Association (IPA), the proposed strike has been deferred until 20th June. The strike aimed to challenge the administration approaches on privatization of ports and wage increments.

China Customs has released Order No. 56 [2017] which adjusts the existing “China Customs Advanced Manifest” requirements for air and sea freight shipments to and from China with effective date 1st June 2018. The purpose of this security filing is to provide the Chinese customs authorities with advance shipment data prior to physical arrival in China.

The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) has been renewed effective 22nd April, 2018 as announced by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The GSP program expired on 31st December, 2017, but has now been renewed through 31st December, 2020. Duties on eligible transactions that occurred during the lapse will be refunded by CBP.

China’s busiest time of year is fast approaching. Chinese New Year (CNY) is celebrated nationwide meaning all businesses around the country will close, including all factories. During this time all workers will travel across the country to return to their families and celebrate the New Year, with all manufacturing shutting down for the duration.

To cope with the pre-CNY volume surge, some carriers have announced rate increase and are applying peak season surcharge. Westbound blank sailings will be implemented by carriers starting from week 7 to 10 (depending on trade lanes) to adjust capacity for the reduced demand.

The union of the Ground Handling Agent in Frankfurt Airport (Main) has called out a strike starting from Thursday, November 23rd, 4:00 a.m. local time, until Friday, November 24th, 6:30 a.m. local time. Cargo handling service at the airport is severely affected, therefore major delays are expected.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) downgraded Irma to a tropical depression Monday night. Irma flooded parts of Jacksonville, Savannah and Charleston yesterday. An estimated 6.6 million people are still without power across the southeastern US, mainly in Florida and Georgia. Due to its size, Irma had a wide ranging impact and supply chains will be severely affected. Fuel and truck shortages are expected.

Hurricane Irma hit Florida as a category 4 hurricane in the Florida Keys before making its way up the West Coast and Central Florida. A state of emergency is still in effect for six East Coast states - Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Virginia.

As Hurricane Irma moves closer, a state of emergency has now been issued for 5 East Coast states - Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) currently categorizes Irma as a category 4 hurricane with 155 mph winds.

Effective July 1, 2016, the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) needs to be put into practice. The convention specifies that shippers are responsible and shall verify on its documentation the Verified Gross Mass of a container prior to it being loaded on board of a vessel.
