Trucking capacity shortage in Mexico

In June 2018, the transportation authority in Mexico has updated the regulations concerning the maximum weight and sizes of container trailers. The size restrictions and enforcement measures result in significant capacity shortages.

Double-trailers have been widely used for long-haul transportation across Mexico. Under the new regulation, the capacity of each truck is reduced because of the size restrictions. This affects a large number of transport companies and existing trailers which do not meet the specified requirements.

All double-trailers now have to obtain special permit by the authority to ensure their sizes are qualified. Strict enforcement has been carried out by nationwide large scale inspections. Drivers who operate non-compliant vehicles will have their license revoked. Trucks pending for permit are not allowed to operate anymore; inspections on the road also lead to further delay of cargo delivery.

Since the regulation leads to structural changes, the situation is not expected to ease on the short run. Please take this into consideration when planning procurement and distribution within Mexico.

At DACHSER, we do our utmost to minimize the impact on your cargo and continuously look for more possible solutions.

If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss with your local DACHSER representatives.
