United States imposed additional tariffs on imported goods from China

As the United States continues to investigate China’s trade practices, the Office of the Unites States Trade Representative (USTR) released two sets of lists of commodities which are subject to additional tariffs.

The first list contains 818 tariffs that will be subject to an additional 25% duty as of July 6th. The second list contains 284 tariffs that are subject to the similar duty increase. Together, the lists combine to approximately 50 billion US dollars of goods imported from China over the course of 2018. For the official statement of the USTR please click here.

First set of applicable tariffs effective July 6

The first list of items includes goods mainly from Chapters 84, 85, 87, 88, and 90 of the United States Harmonized Tariff Code. These chapters include:

  • Machinery
  • Electrical Equipment
  • Television Image and Sound Records and reproducers
  • Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock
  • Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof
  • Measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments

Second set of tariffs effective August 23

The second list of goods imported from China will see an increase in duty of 25% beginning August 23rd. Very few changes were made to the list originally published and includes goods similar to those already included in the Section 301 additional tariffs plus goods from chapters 27, 34, 38, 39, 70, 73, 76, and 79.
