Update - Imports of Steel and Aluminum Duty Rate Increase

On Thursday, March 22nd, the U.S. Trade Representative, announced additional country exemptions and advised that the exemptions would remain until April 30th. The U.S. President will have until April 30th to determine whether or not the exemptions for these countries would be further extended.

As already reported, on March 8, 2018, U.S. President, Donald J. Trump, signed certain proclamations that will increase the duty rate on imported steel and aluminum. Certain exemptions based on country of origin were added late last week but the additional duty rate increases went into effect as expected.

In addition to goods with a country of origin from Canada or Mexico, goods from Australia, Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, and members of the European Union are exempt until April 30th. Here is the official CBP announcement.  

Also, the Bureau of Industry and Security has provided instructions to individuals or organizations that would like to seek exemption from the steel and aluminum duty rate increase. Specific details on how to apply and the procedures to follow can be found here.

As a reminder, the tariff rate for steel will increase to 25% and the tariff rate for aluminum will increase to 10% for all goods classified under the sections listed below:

Goods made of steel and classified under HTSUS subheadings:

• 7206.10 – 7216.50
• 7216.99 – 7301.10
• 7302.10
• 7302.40 – 7302.90
• 7304.10 – 7306.90

Goods made of aluminum and classified under HTSUS subheadings:

• 7601
• 7604 – 7609
• 7616.99.5160
• 7616.99.5170
