Catastrophic Flood in Nepal: DACHSER Supports Terre des Hommes’ Emergency Relief Efforts

Following the devastating flash floods in the border region between Nepal and Tibet, the children’s rights organization Terre des Hommes is significantly expanding its emergency relief efforts on the ground. As a long-standing partner, DACHSER is supporting these efforts with a donation of 50,000 euros, which will go toward providing for affected families and ensuring the targeted protection of children in emergency shelters.
DACHSER has been active in Nepal for many years through long-term projects in collaboration with Terre des Hommes and local partners. “With this rapid support, we aim to help alleviate the immediate suffering of those affected. At the same time, it is important to us to create opportunities for affected children and young people that extend far beyond the acute crisis situation. This also underscores our reliability as a long-term partner on the ground,” says Bernhard Simon, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at DACHSER.

Support for Children and Families on the Ground
The humanitarian situation in the affected areas of Nepal remains dire. Thousands of people are still homeless, while infrastructure in large parts of the region has been destroyed. Local partner organizations of Terre des Hommes are distributing clean drinking water, food, and blankets on the ground. Households with children under two years of age also receive infant formula and urgently needed hygiene and care items. In addition, families particularly affected by the disaster receive portable stoves and solar lamps to help them become self-sufficient. With the additional funding from DACHSER, support for children in particular can be further expanded, in addition to providing essential basic necessities.
“Children are extremely vulnerable, especially in the first few days after a disaster,” explains Joshua Hofert, spokesperson for the Executive Board of Terre des Hommes Germany. “Many of them have lost family members, are in shock, and are exposed to acute dangers such as exploitation or disease in overcrowded emergency camps. The rapid increase in funding is an important step toward establishing safe spaces for children, ensuring initial psychosocial care, and stabilizing local aid efforts.”
Terre des Hommes is committed to ensuring that the rights and needs of children remain the top priority in all relief efforts. This includes protection from violence in emergency shelters, medical care, as well as drinking water and food. Since the needs in the region continue to exceed the capacity of the current relief budget, Terre des Hommes is calling for additional donations.
